About this place
One of the world's largest graveyards.
Spread across roughly 10 square kilometres outside Thatta, Makli Necropolis holds an estimated half a million tombs built over six centuries by Sindh's Samma, Arghun, Tarkhan and Mughal rulers. The carved sandstone and glazed tilework on the grandest mausoleums rank among the finest funerary architecture in the Islamic world, and UNESCO lists the site as a World Heritage property. Walking among the weathered tombstones at dusk, with the Indus delta's flat horizon behind them, is one of the more haunting experiences in southern Pakistan.
