About this place

Terraced Mughal gardens of fountains and shade.

Built by Emperor Shah Jahan in 1641, the Shalimar Gardens descend across three terraces on an original hydraulic system that still feeds over 400 fountains today. The layout follows the Persian charbagh tradition, geometric quadrants divided by water channels, meant to evoke paradise on earth. Marble pavilions, ancient banyan trees and the soft sound of moving water make it one of the most peaceful heritage sites in Lahore, especially early in the morning before the crowds arrive.
